Hey Reader If you’ve followed my content on social media for some time, you are likely aware that I call this stuff out regularly. Recently I've seen a huge rise in ‘fat burning’ and ‘body fat targeting’ workout videos and, well, today felt like a good day to emphasise just how ridiculous they all are. I posted this video today on the topic and I’m really not sure who I blame for this nonsense persisting. Mostly, I blame influencers looking to exploit misinformation for likes and views. I blame gyms who will use any type of ‘fat burning’ advertisements to sell class spaces and gym memberships. I also blame diet companies looking to profit off our insecurities. Wherever your blame lies, it’s all just pretty gross as they are point blank lying to you. You’ve probably noticed that I very rarely ever talk about fat loss on social media. Not that I judge anyone who has that goal. It’s your body and you can do what you want with it. I just simply never want fat loss to be the main focus or the emphasis of how I support others. Health and fitness improvements are represented in our behaviours, not how our bodies look. I would much rather put my time and energy into helping people make lifelong behaviour changes, not short term fixes. However, I am a personal trainer and the large majority of the questions I receive are around the topic of fat loss. So now and again we have to bust a few myths to prevent people from falling prey to those pesky exploiters of “wellness”. So to clear this up: Fat burning workouts and body fat targeting exercises are a myth. There is no magic workout that will burn body fat. There is no special technique for how to move your body that will burn more body fat. Ignore the gym posters. Oh, and please also ignore the influencers that have built their followings and made their money from selling tummy blasting/FUPA burning workouts. They are 100% lying to you. Before you go, this week we got to interview the brilliant Shauna Spence (otherwise known as The Nutrition Tea) on our podcast. We discussed Intuitive Eating and a non-diet approach to nutrition. I think you’ll love it! Cheers, Michael P.S. - we have some space in my Online Personal Training program. Fill out this form to register your interest. |
Reader - this morning, the Diary of a CEO podcast host, Stephen Bartlett, has been in the news because his podcast has been found to have spread some pretty dangerous health misinformation. Apple named this podcast the top downloaded in the UK for the last three years in a row. I think it’s safe to say that this is pretty darn dangerous! So, seeing as this morning is all about calling out the nonsense of the wellness world, I thought I would share with you a couple of posts of mine you may...
Hey Reader It’s been a few weeks since my last email. Life got… well, busy. Between wrapping up end-of-year plans and prepping some exciting things for 2025, we also discovered some big news: my wife is pregnant again! Exciting? Absolutely. Overwhelming? You bet. It’s a reminder that life can get wonderfully unpredictable. And when things pile up, it’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you’re failing or not doing enough. So this email is as much a message to myself as it is to you:...
Just a quick email today Reader I’m not sure if you saw, but I was invited onto LBC radio to talk about an incoming junk food advert ban. I was asked whether it would be enough to “improve the health of the nation”. I got to moan about all that is wrong with health and fitness advice, and also where we’d be better off putting our focus. I thought you would enjoy it and I welcome your thoughts on the video!
